Already Week 11

This week we focused mainly on CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, which is the punishment you get for committing a capital crime whether its fraud or murder. In learning about capital punishment we heard from representatives of organizations that were against the DEATH PENALTY and next week we will hear from those that are for it. We visited ARLINGTON JAIL, needless to say it was very nice and we also visited the PRE-RELEASE CENTER in Whiteflint. This facility houses inmates that are to the final stages of their sentencing and will soon be released. It was a very good structured facility, the people are no-longer called inmates they are referred to as residence. The set up style is like a college campus, they have to find jobs which is very hard, they have a dorm room with a roommate or some live at home. They are monitored closely and they have wonderful caseworkers.
P.S. The Pre-Release Center is a wonderful place to intern!!!

MID-TERMS

Ok, so the MID-TERM is approaching. We have to be able to connect the different law enforcement agencies with the courts and other topics discussed in class in order to explain how they all work together. It is VERY important to take good notes and pay attention to the speakers in class. I am very excited I did well on my first abstract and received and 85%. Let's hope that I do well on the mid-term as well!!!!!

Last Fridays Mission

Omg...Last Friday was amazing. Our Justice class got to visit the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, VA. I learned so much here and it is such a cool place. All of the students were in their uniforms and the set up is basically like a college campus but with a shooting range and a top secret state of the art Forensics Lab. I really enjoyed this trip and I am influenced that one day I will work for the FBI..No not as a special agent because they have to go through serious physical training but as a Professional Agent...Clinical Forensic Psychologist of the BSU....Lol sound good doesn't it :)

Abstract 1

Working on this abstract paper 1 about Law Enforcement......what should my theme be???? The paper basically has to be about a particular theme of our interest over the past couple of weeks. I have to use notes and references of different speakers and readings given so far....this should be simple...I really love how Psychology plays a big role in all of this. I think my theme will be how Psych is incorporated in Law Enforcement!!!!

Applying for the Program

In order to apply for the program you can be a sophomore in college and apply directly on line or a representative may come to your institution and you can apply directly. If you are a freshmen they have a program here at American University called the Mentorship Program that is very similar but it is for freshmen in college. Being on exchange as a sophomore was a quick decision that I made but it was a wise decision. This experience is like non other. Yes, I am the youngest one in my program but that is okay, it is never to early. If you are wondering about the credits and how things work will let me explain. Being in the program you can receive up to 17 credits.
  • 4cr Internship (You will be able to choose an internship "anywhere" you want in DC that relates to your major or program)
  • 4cr Seminar I ( Seminar I is basically two days of classes that you will have related to the program that you are in for the first have of the program)
  • 4cr Seminar II ( Seminar II is exactly that same is Seminar I but it is for the second half of the program)
  • 4cr Research paper of Elective( this credit is given if you choose to do a research paper which in some cases can count for a capstone or you can choose the elective class like I did an fulfill a credit such as Spanish)
For the two days of class, they are so fun. It is not like any other class. In the mornings we have a speaker from in Law Enforcement come speak with us...for example Assistant Director of Secret Service, Special Agents, Executive Director of National Black Police Association or Chief of Capital Police ..just to name a few !!! Then in the afternoon around 12 we go visit Law Enforcement agencies such as the FBI Headquarters and Training Academy in Quantico, Supreme Court, The Pentagon, The Police Foundation and mannnyyyyy more.

The Arrival

When I arrived here in Washington DC for the Washington Semester Program it was such a new and different experience. It took time for me to get use to different things and the environment but I have adjusted. Here at the Washington Semester program there are ten different programs. Lol you can view them on the american.edu website :) http://www.american.edu/washingtonsemester/. Each program is focused on something different and will be a great experience for any major. I am a psychology major in the Justice program but have had the opportunity to meet and network some amazing people in Law Enforcement that hold very "high" positions. But lets back track to the arrival. Within the program there are students from all over the world and many countries. I have two roommates. One is from Tokyo, Japan and the other is from New Jersey. Something new for me was the "co-ed" dorms...Wow coming from Spelman I did not expect this but I have adjusted to the dorms...kind of..lol.
